5-Inch vs. 6-Inch Gutters in New York: How to Choose

Choose gutter size by roof area, pitch, valleys, run length, outlet layout and downspout capacity—not by width alone.

Updated October 23, 2026Gutters Only

Choosing between 5-inch and 6-inch gutters starts with one question: how much roof water has to move through each gutter run, and how quickly can the outlets and downspouts carry it away? The old gutter size is useful information, but it should not be the only reason to install the same size again.

When 5-inch gutters can be a good fit

Five-inch K-style gutters remain a common residential choice. They can work well on straightforward roof areas with reasonable run lengths, adequate downspouts and no history of overflow. A properly pitched 5-inch system with well-placed outlets can be a better installation than an oversized gutter connected to poor downspout routing.

When 6-inch gutters deserve a closer look

Six-inch gutters provide more cross-sectional capacity and are worth considering on larger or steeper roof areas, long runs, roof sections with concentrated valleys, or homes where a smaller system repeatedly overflows during hard rain. The larger gutter should be paired with outlets and downspouts that can use that additional capacity.

Valleys and roof geometry matter

A roof valley can send water from two roof planes into a short section of gutter. That local concentration can overwhelm a system even when the rest of the roof drains normally. Gutter sizing should therefore be evaluated by individual roof sections instead of treating the whole house as one simple rectangle.

Downspouts are part of the capacity calculation

A gutter can only empty as quickly as its outlets and downspouts allow. Long runs with too few drops, undersized outlets, restrictive elbows or poor discharge routes can create a bottleneck. Upsizing the gutter without addressing the bottleneck may not solve the original overflow.

What to compare before choosing a size

  • Roof area feeding each gutter run
  • Roof pitch and concentrated valleys
  • Length between outlets
  • Number and size of downspouts
  • Where downspouts can discharge
  • Existing overflow or standing-water patterns
  • Fascia condition and available mounting surface
