Downspouts are part of gutter capacity
A larger gutter cannot perform if the outlets and downspouts are the bottleneck. We review how many drops serve each run, their size, elbow restrictions and where the leaders terminate.
- Outlet quantity and placement
- 2x3 versus larger 3x4 downspouts where appropriate
- Long runs with only one outlet
- Elbows or offsets restricting flow
- Loose or damaged vertical leaders
- Extensions and final discharge
When adding or moving a downspout helps
Long runs, concentrated valleys or repeated overflow near one end can sometimes benefit from another outlet or a different downspout location. The building and ground-level discharge options determine whether relocation is practical.
Where the water goes next
A downspout should not simply move roof runoff from the gutter to a poor ground-level location. Extensions or rerouting may be needed when discharge collects near the building, an entry or other sensitive area.
